Bring Your Own Technology

Parents/Students:

Providence is a busy place over the summer break as we are preparing for the return of the students in August.  The purpose of this letter is to make you aware of a change that is taking place in the high school (9th – 12th grades) this year.  High School students will have the privilege of bringing their laptops into the classroom!  We are very excited about this change and hope that you are as well.  The students will be able to take notes, do research, access their Providence student email account, etc. in the classroom without the need to visit the Media Center computers.  Please know that this is an option not a requirement and is only available to high school students.  As with any addition to the classroom process there will be criteria that must be met and boundaries established.  For those who wish to bring their laptop next year we offer the following strong recommendations to our families when considering the best options for student computers. These recommendations provide the greatest ease when interacting with our current network.

  • Windows based operating system platform for Microsoft Live essentials
  • Internet Explorer 9 or Firefox 3.0 or better browser (Safari and Google Chrome are not supported)
  • Minimum processor – Core 2 or better
  • Must be able to run Adobe Flash Player and Shock Wave
  • Contain a minimum of 2G RAM
  • Minimum resolution standard of 1024 x 768
  • Wi-Fi capable (the internet will be accessed is via a protected wireless connection)
  • CD/DVD capability is recommended
  • 15 to 17” screen size is recommended (not required) for ease in viewing the entire page on screen without scrolling over (please note that a 17” screen will use more battery power than a 15 in screen so plan your battery needs accordingly)

You may also have some questions about...

  • What textbooks are downloaded this year?
    • We do not have any E-book textbooks this year however we are working with our suppliers for future availability.
  • What if my battery needs charging?
    • Each student will be required to bring sufficient battery life to supply them with computer power for an entire day.  Electrical supply in the school building will not be available for this purpose.
  • What if my laptop won’t fit in my locker?  (Interior locker measures 10 ½ x 11 ½ x 35)

Do I have to carry it all day or can I leave it in a classroom?

  • Providence cannot be responsible for the safety of all students’ personal computer/electronic devices.  Students will not be allowed to leave laptops or other personal electronic devices in the classroom.
  • What will my student do with his/her laptop during PE?
    • Students will not be allowed to bring the laptop into the locker room.  All laptops must be stored in the hallway lockers during PE class.
  • Can I bring my laptop in a protective case?
    • Yes, laptops may be brought into the classroom in a protective cover; however, the cover shall be for the sole purpose of electronic device protection only. Cases that are used as a backpack and/or to transport textbooks, papers, etc. will be considered to be a backpack and will not be allowed in the classroom.

We look forward to seeing you in the fall.

David Patterson
