Stallion Basketball player, Will Cummings, heating up the court and pages of ESPN!

(07/14/2010)  - NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. -- The Nike Peach Jam, and other major travel circuit basketball tournaments serve as an opportunity for players to showcase their talents and gain increased exposure with college coaches. Oftentimes, a high school player will enter the summer months as an unknown and leave as a fast-rising prospect or one will take the court as a borderline mid-major to high-major recruit and solidify himself as a target on one level or the other. Jacksonville (Fla.) Providence School point guard Will Cummings is one that is straddling the mid-major / high-major fence and is hoping to further impress some of the nation's top programs, and maintain his status among the mid-majors that value his skill-set. Cummings, who played well throughout the Peach Jam, had head coaches from a host of mid-majors in the gym watching him every time he stepped foot on the hardwood. Like so many others, he was taking notice of those watching. Among those on the sidelines watching was a handful of current and former Southern Conference coaches including Matt Matheny (Elon), Shane Nichols (Wofford), Ed Conroy (Tulane), Buzz Peterson and Matt McMahon (UNCW) as well as Randy Peele (Winthrop), Billy Kennedy (Murray State) and Blaine Taylor (Old Dominion). A long list of others was present as well, and each was treated to a solid performance from the 6-foot, 160-pound guard. As of now, his recruitment remains fairly open, as only two schools have come forward with offers. Others are heavily recruiting him, and with some it's just a matter of time before they offer. "I'm still pretty open," Cummings said. "I'm going to start narrowing it down after July. Right now I have two offers, UNF (North Florida) and American. We went to Houston EYBL and then recruiting started to pick up. "As of now, I'm waiting for offers from Murray State, UCF, Tulane, Winthrop, Old Dominion - I took a visit there in April during the school year, UNC Wilmington, Elon, Furman - several schools from the SoCon and Conference USA like East Carolina, JU, Mercer - a lot of mid-majors. "I'm hoping after the Peach Jam I'll start getting interest from high majors. I'm still working trying to get offers." While each of these schools appears to be heavily recruiting Cummings, Appalachian State's new staff is simply keeping a close eye on him. Like with so many other schools in attendance, ASU's level of interest could potentially pick up following the event. "I heard from the old coaching staff (at Appalachian State); they went to UNC Wilmington," he said. "Their head coach is here today (Tuesday), too. I haven't heard from the new staff at Appalachian State, though." AS of today, North Florida and a few others are trying to make a heavy push for his services before bigger programs get involved. "UNF is coming real hard. That's my home university - they wanted me to commit before I came here," Cummings added. "Murray State is coming real hard, the head coach is here. Old Dominion is coming hard, too. Their coach is here. Tulane is starting to pick up - coach Conroy was here, too. A lot of schools are starting to pick up their interest." Some with knowledge of Cummings' recruitment expect to see him begin to draw more and more attention from larger programs, and ultimately takes him out of the mid-major ranks. Until then, however, he remains a steal for any mid-major program that can land his signature. The talented guard has a high basketball IQ, and is working hard to improve his game. The rising senior offered a quick glimpse of the things he is working on this summer. "My biggest positive is getting to the basket," he said. "When I do open gym I don't go to the basket anymore, I just start working on jump shots. In AAU it's a big difference from playing in high school where there's not many big guys, so now I'm working to develop my mid-range, off the fastbreak pulling up instead of getting all the way to the basket. I know in college it won't be easy like that - so I'm mainly just working on knocking down open shots consistently. That's what I've been working on - coming off ball screens and hitting shots." Though ASU is not currently involved in his recruitment, things could certainly change in this regard. Keep an eye out for his name, as he is becoming one of the more sought after point guards on the mid-major level.

Each year the award is presented to one school in each classification whose total sports program best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship by its coaches, players and spectators.
