French I Description

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to French and French culture and to develop communication skills and cross-cultural understanding.

The content includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Beginning skills in listening and speaking with special attention to pronunciation
  • Fundamentals of grammar
  • Fundamentals of culture

Credit: 1 (Year)
Open to grades 9-12
Prerequisites: None

 

French II Description

The purpose of this course is to reinforce previously acquired fundamental skills. This course develops increased listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, as well as cultural awareness.

The content includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • expansion of the listening and oral skills previously acquired
  • increased emphasis on reading and writing, while oral communication remains the primary objective

Credit: 1 (Year)
Open to grades 9-12
Prerequisites: French I Teacher Recommendation and grade of "C" or higher in French I

 

French III Description

The purpose of this course is to expand previously acquired skills. The content should include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • expansion of vocabulary and conversational skills through discussions based on selected readings
  • acquisition of additional grammatical concepts through analysis of reading selections
  • acquisition of contemporary vocabulary relevant to everyday life of French-speaking people

Credit: 1 (Year)
Open to all grades
Prerequisites: French II Teacher recommendation and grade of "C" or higher in French II

 

AP French IV Language Description

The college level Advanced Placement course in French language focuses on proficiency in both oral and written language. Students should have a good command of the grammar and considerable competence in listening, reading, speaking, and writing.

Credit: 1 (Year)
Open to grades 9-12
Prerequisites: French III Teacher recommendation and grade of "C" or higher in French III

Per the Providence Pupil Progression Plan, the student must take the advanced placement exam as part of the requirements in order to pass any and all AP classes

 

Spanish I Description

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to Spanish and Hispanic culture and to develop communication skills and cross-cultural understanding. The content includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • beginning skills in listening and speaking with special attention to pronunciation
  • introduction to reading and writing
  • fundamentals of grammar
  • fundamentals of culture

Credit: 1 (Year)
Open to grades 9-12
Prerequisites: None
