Life Management Description

The purpose of this course is to develop and enhance critical life management skills necessary to make sound decisions and take positive actions for healthy and effective living.

The content includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • positive emotional development communication, interpersonal, and coping skills
  • responsible decision making and planning
  • nutrition and weight management
  • substance use and misuse, including the hazards of smoking
  • consumer knowledge and decision-making skills
  • community resources
  • personal money management
  • one-rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • first aid for obstructed airway
  • HIV/AIDS
  • human sexuality and pregnancy prevention

Credit: 1/2 (Semester)
Open to grades 9-12
Prerequisites: None

 

Personal Fitness Description

The purpose of this course is to (a) acquire knowledge of physical fitness concepts (b) understand the significance of lifestyle on health and fitness, and (c) begin to develop an optimal level of fitness.

The content includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • safety practices
  • assessment of health-related fitness
  • the importance of physical fitness
  • health problems associated with inadequate fitness levels
  • biomechanical and physiological principles and their application to maintaining and improving health-related physical fitness
  • psychological values of physical fitness, including stress management
  • goal setting
  • nutrition
  • consumer issues
  • fitness activities

Credit: 1/2 (Semester)
Open to grades 9-12

Team Sports/Individual-Dual Sports Description

This is a survey course whose purpose it is to: (a) acquire knowledge of team sports/individual-dual sports play, (b) develop skills in selected team sports, and (c) maintain and/or improve health-related fitness.

The content includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • safety practices
  • assessment of health-related fitness
  • skills
  • techniques
  • strategies
  • rules
  • assessment of basic skills
  • consumer issues
  • fitness issues

Credit: 1/2 (Semester)
Open to grades 9-12
