English I Honors Description

The purpose of this course is to promote academic excellence in English language arts through enriched experiences in literature, writing, speaking, and listening.

The content includes, but is not limited to, the following:

9th Grade
Prerequisites: Grade of "C" or higher in English 8

 

English II Honors Description

The purpose of this course is to promote academic excellence in English language arts through the study of world literature and through enriched experiences in composition, speech, and listening skills.

The content includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Credit: 1 (Year)
10th Grade
Prerequisites: English I with grade of "C" or higher

 

English III Description

The purpose of this course is to provide instruction in American literature and in English language skills.

The content includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Credit: 1 (Year)
11th Grade
Prerequisites: English II with grade of "C" or higher

 

English III Honors: AP Language and Composition Description

The purpose of this course is to promote academic excellence in English language arts through enriched experiences in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The course also provides instruction in the study of American literature.

The Advanced Placement Program specifies the content which includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Credit: 1 (Year)
11th Grade
Prerequisites: English II Honors Teacher recommendation; A/B English student

Per the Providence Pupil Progression Plan the student must take the advanced placement exam as part of the requirements in order to pass any and all AP classes.

 

English IV Description

The purpose of this course is to provide instruction in English language skills and the study of British literature.

The content includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Credit: 1 (Year)
12th Grade
Prerequisites: English III with a grade of "C" or higher

 


Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition Description

The purpose of this course is to study and practice writing and to study literature. Students will learn to use the modes of discourse and recognize the assumptions underlying various rhetorical strategies. Students will also acquire an understanding of the resources of the language and of the writer's craft. They will develop critical standards for the appreciation of any literary work and increase their sensitivity to literature as shared experience. The Advanced Placement Program specifies the content.
