Current Guidance News

Guidance services are important to the success of Providence Students. Three Upper School counselors work under the supervision of the Assistant Principal for Guidance and Counseling Services. They provide assistance with personal, academic, career, and college counseling.

College counseling is introduced at the 9th grade level through classroom guidance and the EXPLORE test by ACT. Tenth grade students begin to take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT), while in-depth college counseling is done with juniors and seniors. All juniors and seniors are expected to take the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) or American College Test (ACT) to help with advisement about college choices.

Opportunities are provided for juniors and seniors to meet with visiting college admission representatives. The junior/senior counselor offers a browsing library of college catalogs and videos and other materials that students may access. The College Counseling program strives to match students with the college or university that is most suited to their interests and goals. During the second semester of their junior year, students meet with a counselor who will work with them in a highly individualized manner, assisting them with every facet of the college admission process.

Career Counseling begins in the eighth grade at Providence with classroom guidance lessons geared toward career exploration. High school students in grades 9-12 will have in depth career exploration and couseling through follow-up consultations after the EXPLORE and PSAT tests to discuss the results of the career interest inventory sections.

The College Counseling web site is designed to complement this personal relationship, providing parents and students with additional information regarding the college admission process. The site also offers links to diverse internet resources to assist students and parents with topics ranging from college searches and financial aid to testing and athletic recruiting.
