National Honor Society

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organizations established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character (and Citizenship for NJHS). These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since their beginnings in 1921 and 1929.

Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NHS. NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

Membership in the Providence Chapter of the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to our high school students. Membership is open to Juniors and Seniors who meet the selection criteria. Although a cumulative 3.5 unweighted grade point average makes a student eligible for NHS, selection is based on careful consideration of character, service and leadership as well as scholarship.

The Providence Chapter of the National Honor Society was chartered October 27, 1998. The first induction of students into the Providence Chapter of NHS was December 10, 1998.
