WHAT IS THE NEW CALCULATOR?

The Providence School is excited to announce the adoption of a new student calculator, the TI-Nspire CX CAS, for 7th grade Algebra 1 and all  8th–12th grade math and science classes.

WHY IS A NEW CALCULATOR BEING REQUIRED?

The early introduction of these advanced calculators starting in Algebra I and 8th grade Physical Science will allow our students to begin developing a deeper understanding of math and science concepts at a young age. Their familiarity with these calculators will be of tremendous benefit to our students when they begin taking college-entrance exams such as the SAT and ACT. Teachers will be able to provide differentiated instruction to our students as concepts can be demonstrated in multiple ways on the calculator. In the future, these calculators will open the door for many STEM opportunities in coding, robotics, and data collection/analysis in science and math classrooms.

The school has considered the impact upon the families requiring this calculator for 8th through 12th grades. We believe the cost of the calculator will have a great return on the investment. The calculator will have a positive impact on our students’ learning in four key areas – math, science, technology and engineering – as well as their performance on college-entrance exams.

WHAT IS THE COST?

Providence will purchase the calculators in bulk for all students who prepay for the calculator. Our purchasing power will allow us to buy in bulk for a discounted rate that we are passing on to our families. The discounted cost of the calculator is $140.

HOW CAN I ORDER THIS CALCULATOR FOR MY STUDENT?

You will be able to prepay for the calculator at the link on this page above.  Once that payment link is set up, an email will be sent with instructions for prepayment.

IS THERE A WARRANTY FOR THE PREPAID CALCULATORS?

Yes, all calculators purchased through Providence will come with an unconditional two-year warranty covering accidental damage from classroom use as well as initial factory defects.

WHEN WILL MY STUDENT RECEIVE THE CALCULATOR I ORDER THROUGH PROVIDENCE?

All calculators ordered through Providence will be distributed in math class in the first few weeks of school in the fall.

ARE THERE EXCEPTIONS TO WHO IS REQUIRED TO BUY THE NEW CALCULATORS?

Yes, there are 2 exceptions:

  1. A rising senior who owns a TI-89 calculator.  This calculator is not as advanced but will be allowed for rising seniors only for this upcoming year only.
  2. A student who already owns the TI-Nspire CX CAS calculator.
