Providence Hosts Special Olympics ’24

Providence School was honored to collaborate with Special Olympics Florida, uniting 58 Special Olympics athletes from North Florida School of Special Education with Providence students of similar ages, for a day of camaraderie. More than 145 volunteers from Providence’s middle and high school clubs and teams spent the morning of Thursday, March 28 cheering on the athletes and leading them in sports activities and games. Students and athletes were also able to share lunch and enjoy a spontaneous dance break!

“At Providence School, we strive to instill in our students the values of compassion, empathy, and servant leadership,” says Dr. Tim Anderson, Head of School at Providence. “This event is an embodiment of those values, as our students get to meet and cheer for the Special Olympics athletes. We believe in seeing the whole person, celebrating how we are more alike than different, and recognizing that each individual is made in God’s image.”

This collaboration not only provided a platform for athletes to showcase their abilities but also served as a powerful educational opportunity for Providence students. By engaging in this event, they gained firsthand experience in the importance of including all ability levels. The day was filled with laughter and many new friendships were formed. Thank you to the students and teachers who volunteered their time to welcome our guests. We can’t wait for next year!
