About Mr. Maerkl
In 2015, Jonathan Maerkl came on board as our band director. Mr. Maerkl brings with him 13 years of experience teaching at the middle school and high school levels. Ensembles under his direction have achieved numerous superior ratings and enjoyed memorable performances such as the 2008 National Independence Day Parade in Washington D.C. and the 2015 Concert Band Festival at Carnegie Hall in New York, New York.
Mr. Maerkl was in the Honors Program and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Florida State University with a Bachelors of Music Education in 2002. Mr. Maerkl is a brother in the band service fraternity, Kappa Kappa Psi. He holds professional memberships with FBA, FMEA, MENC, and NAfME. He was a part of the FMEA Emerging Leaders Program. He served our local FBA District as Secretary for four years. He is going into his sixth year serving as the District High School Honor Band Chairman.
Mr. Maerkl keeps an active schedule by teaching private lessons for brass and guitar, writing marching band drill, and arranging music. He has worked with many area summer music camps including teaching summer school elementary music through Cathedral Arts Project. What Mr. Maerkl likes most about teaching music to young people is building relationships and teaching students life lessons. In a band, we must all be unified or the performance will be unsuccessful. Students in band learn to coordinate their efforts with such great detail that it cannot help but benefit them in so many other ways. No matter what career choice students make, their lives will be better because they were in the band. Mr. Maerkl wants to help facilitate the most positive and rewarding band experience possible, and through everything, bring glory to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
The Providence Band Program exists for the Glory of the Lord Jesus Christ. Our theme verse is Psalm 33:3, “Play skillfully.” Providence offers band classes to fit all levels of ability and experience.
Our 5th Grade Exploratory Band is a great way for students to begin their instrumental music education earlier than most area schools. The Band resource class meets twice per week and students study flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, or percussion based on aptitude, preference, and need. Middle School Exploratory Band is open to Upper School students who would like to begin learning an instrument. Students will, with the director’s help, choose from Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Baritone, Trombone, Tuba or Percussion. After a year in one of these beginning classes, students are able to play in our Concert Band or Wind Ensemble. Students may also audition to be a part of the Jazz Ensemble.
These three bands represent our school in performances both on and off campus. They also come together with our drum line and Stallionettes in the fall to form our marching band, the Providence Stallion Brigade. The Stallion Brigade had an outstanding 2017 season competing in the Florida Marching Band Championship regional competition. At the Jacksonville University Marching Invitational, they came in best in class for the visual caption. The group also earned second in class overall and Superior drum major.
Our bands participate in the Florida Bandmasters Association’s Music Performance Assessments (MPA’s) such as Marching MPA, Solo and Ensemble, and Concert MPA. These events inspire excellence, as we prepare music for adjudication. Our students routinely earn Excellent and Superior ratings. Our performance at FBA District Marching MPA this year was record setting. The band was awarded an overall Excellent rating, earning Superior in the Visual and General Effect captions for the first time in school history! We also received Excellent ratings from both Music judges, Excellent in Percussion, and a Superior in Auxiliary.
In addition to the all the ensembles mentioned, the band program also boasts an exciting Winter Drumline that lends musical support to our basketball teams and a Winter Guard team made up of Stallionette members. Our Winter Guard earned the highest possible ratings of Superior at State MPA in the Spring of 2017. This was another school first!
The band is growing in quantity and quality because of the hard work of our wonderful students, parents, staff, and God’s blessing. May He guide our path and be glorified as we continue to grow!
