Lower School

Eager to Learn

At Providence, we are not only interested in the mind of the student but the development of the heart.  Our young students are eager to learn and are taught the joys of problem-solving, hands-on science experiments, and creative expression. They enjoy helping others and learning about God as leadership and serving others is introduced.

I love coming to a school where I can learn about God. Everyone here is kind and treats me like family.

Curriculum Overview

The Lower School helps young learners develop strong basic skills and foster a life-long love of learning. Students become strong, independent readers who can interpret and analyze what they read, express themselves clearly in writing, appreciate mathematics as a way of thinking, and understand the basic principles of scientific inquiry.

Core Curriculum

Math

Many strategies and techniques are used to teach math in a practical way. Students are taught addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, measurement, fractions, decimals, and geometry in lower school.

Language Arts

Language arts, phonics, spelling, and reading are part of an integrated curriculum. Our goal is for each child to develop a joy for reading and writing that will extend into adult life.

Social Studies

Basic social science disciplines of history, geography, political science, economics, and sociology are integrated into other curricular areas by encouraging the development of a more global view with a Christian perspective in each student’s approach to life.

Science

Our science program is based on the foundation that God is the creator of all things. Scientific concepts are taught with a hands-on approach to investigate, explore, collect, analyze, and think critically about the vastly complex world that He created.

Bible

Students are immersed in stories of God’s faithfulness through Bible memory, class devotions, and prayer time.

Art

Expressing thoughts, emotions, and ideas are encouraged and developed in lower school art and is frequently tied in with classroom studies.

Chapel

Students enjoy participating in student-led chapel services that build on the foundation of their faith in God.

Media Center

Skills such as differentiating between fiction and nonfiction, learning the areas of the library, using the computer catalog, and assistance with research projects are taught at each grade level.

Music

With the guidance of our Lower School music teacher, each student discovers the joy of music-making through singing, creating, moving, listening, and performing. Students in fifth grade have the opportunity to explore band.

Physical Education

From kindergarten through fifth grade, students discover what it truly means to find joy in active play, healthy living habits, exercise, and team sports.

STEAM Studio

The STEAM studio is where science, art, and architecture come to life! From solar ovens to basic soldering, students explore making and inventing with their own hands!

Technology

Technology is used to enhance daily learning and instructional time. Mobile labs are used in the classroom, resource classes and the Dyer Media Center giving students options that work with their flexible schedules and space.

Resource Instruction

Our Lower School resource instruction adds project-based learning to create critical thinkers. Problem solving is at the core of our STEAM instruction.
