Varsity Football Defeats UC

With a winning streak under their belt, Providence is aiming for the district title.  When they overcame University Christian in a thrilling 17-14 victory in a District 1-1M matchup on Friday night, they gained a significant advantage.  The Stallions hadn’t faced an opponent of UC’s caliber until Friday night. Under Coach Williams, they have had some solid wins and their only loss was to Fernandina Beach at the start of the season.

Starting the second half, Providence was down by two touchdowns but responded with confidence.  Winning this game was a major victory for the Stallions with one more (Trinity Christian) left to win the district. Mason Williams had a 22-yard touchdown run on the opening drive of the second half to get Providence on the board.

Mason had another big run in the fourth quarter that set up a 42-yard field goal by Gavin Nowlin-McFarlane to get the Stallions within 4 points (14-10). The next drive started on Providence’s own 9 after a UC punt left the Stallions with a long 91-yard field disadvantage. With less than a minute left, Williams fired the game-winning touchdown pass to Josh Stallings.

It was Providence’s first win over UC since a 37-28 victory on Sept. 5, 2014. Providence is now the No.2 seed in District 1-1M in the FHSAA rankings, and ranked 10th in the State FHSAA 1M Football rankings.  The Stallions will face Trinity Christian on Oct. 27 in a clash to decide the District 1-1M title.
