State Championship Game

The Providence Stallions boys’ basketball team ended their season in the state championship game as was their preseason goal, but fell just short of the conclusion they envisioned. The Stallions played their hearts out but Westminster Academy ultimately used their size advantage to win the Class 4A state title last Friday night. The game was tied at half, 23 to 23, in a defensive battle before the Lions pulled ahead for good in the 3rd quarter.

The Stallions completed the season with a 25-6 record and #2 ranking in Class 4A. Congratulations to our boys on another great season!

State Semifinal Game

The Providence boys basketball team had to step up and play some good, old-fashioned defense on Wednesday in the semifinal state championship round.  A dominant third quarter pushed them over the top to beat Miami Archbishop Carroll with a score of 67-48.  This is the 4th state title that the Stallions are chasing after and during a post-game interview Coach Martin said “What we do on Friday night is when you cross over the lines. When it comes to Friday night at 8, here’s the question; are we going to go out there for the 70 plays that we’re going to play. Seventy plays, 35 on offense, 35 on defense, and in the moment, are we going to beat these guys, in the moment? From one play to the next. ¦ We’re not going to be perfect, but we’re trying to stay in that moment of winning that one battle.

“He challenged our manhood a little bit in the locker room, said guard Zack Bryant, a UAB signee who led the Stallions with 23 points. “In my mind, I felt like it could be anyone’s game coming out in the second half. Something had to give. The first half was back-and-forth and Providence led by two going into the locker room.  The Stallions came out and put on a defensive war in the third quarter, with Bryant and Kyle Marion shutting down their opponents.

The area’s fourth all-time career leading scorer finished with 22 points. Bryant now has 2,256 in his career. Providence crushed Archbishop Carroll on the glass, outrebounding the Bulldogs 38-22. Ahren Freeman’s 10 rebounds led both teams. Jacorie Archie added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Stallions.

The Stallions will play Westminster Academy on Friday, March 3rd at 8 PM for the 4A state title.  Both teams are equal in talent and abilities and the Stallions faced them early in their season, losing by only two points.  Sign up for the fan bus below.  For those who cannot make the trip to Lakeland, you will be able to watch online at the Spectrum Sports Network.
